Ergonomics, design and built quality
Redmi 4A has a classic, simple design. It's light-heavy in hand, and you almost can't feel it in the pocket. It has only 8.5 millimeters. Managing the device is simple even with one hand, because the Redmi 4A has virtual keys physically separated from the screen. The design quality is solid. It's obvious that this is a plastic device but it does not look cheap anyway This is an example of how budget smartphones are no longer unattractive. The keys on the side might be more prominent.
Display and keyboard
The 5-inch screen has a high-quality IPS matrix. The screen view is well in all angles. It has HD resolution (720x1280p) resulting in about 300 ppi. You will not see pixels, unless you look at it under the magnifying glass. The colors on the screen are dimmed, the contrast is somewhat stronger. The display can be used in direct sunlight, although you may want to look for shade to manage the functions better. The virtual keyboard has widely arranged keys, but it responds slower.
There is a built-in Li-Ion battery with a higher capacity of 3120 mAh under the hood. Unfortunately, battery life with advanced use does not stand out of class. It gave me a full day of using all the apps, calls, and messages, and I was expecting more because of the high capacity. Since it is a budget smartphone, there is no wireless or fast charging function. Charging up to 100% will take just over two hours on the charger.
Operating system and usability
The latest Android 7.0 Nougat with Xiaomi's upgraded interface is available. Due to the refinement of the interface, you may think that this is not even Android. There are no menus, but all icons are placed on the home screens. You can add widgets and arrange icons as you like. Original widgets are not very attractive, but if you make an effort, you'll find everything in the Google Play Store. The pull-back bar offers well-organized fast settings, but detailed settings are not so much clear.
Redmi 4A has Snapdragon 425 with quad-core processor, and Adreno 308 graphics chip. The A-53 cores are economical, but not strong like those in the Snapdragon 820. It's a solid processor that will do well in everyday tasks such as chatting, surfing, browsing social networks and YouTube. It has 2GB of RAM, allowing you to have several tabs and apps opened simultaneously. The chipset achieves 36,600 points on the AnTuTu Benchmark test. It can also launch the most advanced games.
Rear camera
Camera app is running in a second. The interface is simple for shots and video, while other icons are very small and it takes a while to learn how to use advanced camera options. With 13MP and f/2.2 lens, you will get very nice photos at daylight, so the camera will be good for family usage. In low-light conditions and in the dark, the pictures may be blurry, but you can get useful photos with street lights. HD video is solid throughout the day, while at night it is only somewhat usable.

Front camera
The front 5MP camera also has a f/2.2 lens aperture, but in daylight it is seen that the photos are pixelized and it will be good only when you low the resolution for Instagram or to 2MP. HD video from the front camera is usable, but the picture is also grainy. At night the video is hardly usable. The front to rear camera switch icon is very small, but is accesible by the touch.

Connectivity, memory and multimedia
With WiFi (direct and hotspot), Bluetooth v4.1 and 4G LTE wireless connectivity, only NFC and infrared port are missing. The device has 16GB of internal memory, and it's expandable with microSD cards up to 256GB. The loudspeaker is on the rear, so it will mute, if the smartphone is on the desk. The volume goes up to 80dB which is great, but the sound is shallow. It's advisable to connect a more expensive headset, because the sound will be great. The FM radio is also built-in.
With A-GPS and GLONASS built-in receivers, the navigation across Google Maps provides turn-by-turn in languages. Maps and voice instructions can only be partially downloaded to the device. The application interface is straightforward, but not as intuitive as the iPhone, and a bit older Microsoft, or Lumia devices.

Total score
Redmi 4A has a slim profile. It has a good screen, and a solid camera for daylight shooting (the front is a bit worse though). The chipset is great for basic application use. I can't say that you've missed something special, expensive smartphones that offer faster charging, more advanced cameras and aluminum construction. In terms of purpose, the Redmi 4A is at the start more than favorable, and further price downturn in the future will only justify the investment.
